Hot Rods Hints-FAQ

Shining Star

By Lenny Rudow

Remove oxidation, leave a showroom-quality finish on your boat, and get a date with a BOATING cover model?!  Well, not quite, but a new product, Hot Rods Restoration Wax, claims to deliver on those first two promises, so I decided to test it on my neighbor's 1984 Larson.

Application is a bit different than with traditional wax or oxidation removal products.  Instead of rubbing and buffing, this wax needs to be worked into the gel coat, then wiped clean before it hazes.  That eliminates the buffing process, but it also means you'll need more rags than you would for a normal wax job.  If you use the same cloth surface over and over, you'll end up reapplying it by accident.

When I stepped back to take a gander at my handiwork, I could see my smile reflected in the hullsides-this stuff works.  The shine was as good as any other wax, and since I didn't have to remove the oxidation with a separate product, it saved me time and energy.  But how would it look applied to fresh, new gel coat?  To find out, I used it on my six-month old center console.  When I was done, the shine factor had doubled, and two weeks later, after several saltwater uses, it appeared freshly waxed.
